DMGS, Ijero-Ekiti 70th Founder's Day Anniversary Kicks Off
Activities marking the 70th Founder’s Day Anniversary of Doherty Memorial Grammar School, Ijero-Ekiti, have kicked off in the town with a visit to the Owa Ajero and the traditional ruler of the prominent town, Oba Adebayo Adewole, in his palace.
Welcoming his guests, Oba Adewole went down memory lane and traced the founding of the institution to a Christian missionary, Princess Ariwoola of the Arojojoye ruling House, who was sold to slavery early in life but later miraculously returned to Nigeria as a missionary after her marriage to Rev. J. Doherty, another missionary. The School, he recalled, was named after the couple’s wealthy son, who provided funds for the eventual takeoff of the School on February 7, 1955.
Responding, the President of the School’s Old Students Association Worldwide, Dr Michael Abiodun Arokodare, thanked the royal father for his vivid recollection of the history of the foundation of the School and sought his blessings for the weeklong programme marking the anniversary.
